Outrigger Canoe Paddle & Rock Wall Restoration

Gain a deep understanding of Hawaiians as voyaging experts and ocean navigators.

Learn through Hawaiian chants, storytelling and first hand experience paddling the wa’a (canoe) and lifting pōhaku (rock) in the loko i'a (Hawaiian fishpond).

Hawaiian Fishpond

Hawaiian Fishpond

After initial cultural orientation, an oli kahea (permission chant) and a lesson in paddling basics, we paddle along the coastline while listening to Hawaiian knowledge and chanting along with a Hawaiian Practitioner through call and response. Sea turtle sightings are very common.

Guests will have the option to cool off in the water for a swim before arriving at the loko i'a (fish pond), built 500 years ago by 10,000 Hawaiian men. Groups will learn the history and ecological importance of the loko i’a while helping to restore the same ocean kuapā (rockwall) built by Hawaiians long ago.

Minimum group size of 5, 11 or more (based on canoes seating 5 to 11 people)
Suggested donation of $99/per adult
$89 per youth under 18

*Donations pay Hawaiian Cultural Practitioners and raise money for free programs for those in need on Maui.
